Jepun adalah negara ke-10 di dunia yang mempunyai jumlah penduduk teramai (data 2015). kepulauan Honsyu mempunyai keluasan sekitar 23 ribu kilometer persegi dan merupakan pulau ketujuh terbesar di dunia. Keluasan seluruh Jepun adalah lebih kurang sama dengan negara Jerman. Disebabkan lebih kurang 70% negara Jepun dikelilingi oleh gunung-ganang, penduduk lebih tertumpu di kawasan lembah dan di kawasan pantai bagi membina penempatan.
